Replacing an Old Steam Shower: Will a New Model Fit Your Existing Space?

In many cases, a new steam shower can go into the same space as your old one and reuse much of the existing plumbing and electrical. Before you buy, measure three things: the footprint, the ceiling height and the path into the bathroom.

Here’s how to check fit and plan a smooth replacement.

Step 1: Measure your current footprint

Measure the width and depth of the space where your current unit sits, wall to wall. Also note whether it’s a corner unit, an alcove unit or a freestanding enclosure.

Many common steam shower footprints are 30x60 or 32 x 60. If your space matches one of these, you’ll have the widest choice of replacement models.

Step 2: Measure your ceiling height

A steam shower enclosure includes its own ceiling. Measure from the finished floor to the bathroom ceiling and compare it to the height of the new unit, leaving room for installation. Typically, you need 5-6 inches of clearance to install the ceiling.

Step 3: Measure the path in

This is the step people forget. Your new steam shower arrives in panels or crates that need to get through every doorway, hallway and stairway between your front door and the bathroom. Measure the narrowest point along the way.

Matching the drain and water lines

Check where your existing drain sits relative to the walls. Many prefab units have a drain in a set position, so a new model with a similar drain location will make the swap much simpler. Hot and cold supply lines can usually be adapted by a plumber.

Tip: take a photo of your current drain location with a tape measure in the frame. It makes it much easier for our team to match you to a compatible model.

Checking the electrical

Steam generators typically need a dedicated circuit. If your old unit had one, you may be able to reuse it, but the new generator’s power requirements must match the circuit. Have your electrician compare the new model’s specifications with your existing breaker and wiring before installation.

Removing the old unit

Removal usually involves disconnecting the water and power, unscrewing the panels and lifting out the base. While a handyman or plumber can do the work, any capable homeowner can usually remove an existing shower enclosure as long as the plumbing and electrical are disconnected.

Plan for disposal, too. Many local waste services accept large household items with advance notice.

How long does a replacement take?

A like-for-like swap is usually quicker than a first-time installation because the plumbing, drain and electrical are already in place. Plan on 4-5 hours of assembly time for a swap out.

Frequently asked questions

Will a new steam shower fit where my old one was?

Often, yes. Many replacement models share common footprint sizes. Measure the width, depth and ceiling height of your current space, and send us the numbers along with your old model number. We’ll list the units that fit.

Can I reuse my existing plumbing and electrical?

In many cases. A plumber can usually adapt existing supply lines, and a matching drain position makes the swap much easier. The electrical circuit must meet the new generator’s requirements, so have an electrician confirm before installation.

How do I get rid of my old steam shower?

Yes, however the work involved depends on the type of steam shower. Steam shower kits can be disassembled rather easily using traditional tools while custom tiled steam showers require more grunt work, heavy duty tools and typically make more of a mess due to the nature of the job. Many local waste services also collect large household items with advance scheduling.

How long does a replacement installation take?

A replacement is usually faster than a first-time install because the plumbing and electrical are already in place.
